2026 FIFA World Cup

Havertz has a decent'ish record for Germany though. He's not quite in the Klose category of being pretty average at club level and fantastic for Germany, but they do have a habit of getting a tune out of unheralded players. I don't think you can ever rule them out.
They tend to get great performances out of good players. At least they used to. Klose is a classic example, and he wouldn't lace the boots of many of their great strikers. That's a huge credit to him, though. It also used to be the case that you could "never underestimate the Germans", but I always feel they are struggling when they don't arrive at a World Cup with a superstar. There's no Seeler, Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller, Rummenigge, or Matthäus here. I don't even think there is a Ballack.

I think you could argue that the 2002 team was perhaps their weakest - until 2022 - and that squad definitely bear out your suggestion that they get a lot out of what they have. But Ballack and Kahn were world-class. We also hear that their 1986 side wasn't great, but it did have some legendary players albeit at less-than-peak junctures in their careers (Rummenigge, Matthäüs, Völler, Brehme). Could we really say they have a world-class operator in the current squad? Lots of talent, yes, but if Nagelsmann can genuinely get a tune out of these flakey players this summer, I will be impressed. They lack...leaders. The superstar players I have mentioned were all leaders - and most of them captains. They like a spielführer here in Deutschland...

One thing they ALWAYS have is a class keeper. I worry about Neuer. He was incredible a decade ago, but I think there's always a mistake in him these days, and they haven't replaced him. Maier, Schumacher, Kahn, and the young Neuer were all the best in the world in their time. I think they are going to need Musiala and Wirtz to truly step up - and maybe young Karl will get a run and provide a bit of magic missing from the Nationalmannschaft for too long. Whether we like it or not, just as Star Wars needs Darth Vader, the World Cup needs Germany to play their natural role of terrifying pantomime villain.

How can you defend Maguire being left out after a good season and John Stones potentially being included? It’s farcical. Or Colwell, who has barely kicked a ball.
Think Tuchel likes certain players and sticks to them.
He's been given an extention now no matter the outcome so maybe he wants a squad that he can carry to the Euro's and Maguire wouldn't have been one of them.

Tuchel is rotten. Still picks Henderson and drops perhaps the best-performing English centre half from his World Cup squad. It is seriously weird.

And picking a squad for the Euros, if this is even what he is doing, is indefensible. The World Cup
Is the biggest tournament in the sport.

The Foden omission was to be expected, but if you were told in 2024 that he wouldn't make the next World Cup squad, you'd have thought he'd suffered a career-ending injury.

What a fall from grace for what I always felt was a hyped and overrated player. Talented, yes. But I always felt he lacked that underrated quality...brain.
