2026 FIFA World Cup

Lowest scoring world cup ever! However I get it. I am precisely 4 years older and mexico 86 is mine.

Yeah, that surprised me that, when I saw it, but there was definitely more to that tournament than a goal fest, Many close games was one thing that made it special. I think there was also a sense of occasion.

The intro music was iconic, the iconic presenters of our time, the players had character (like Milla's dancing), the emergence of African nations, the mascot looked cool. Me running home to be able to see the semi final penalties after my parents allowed me to watch extra time at my mates, but had to be home even if it went to penalties (and then subsequently crying myself to sleep  ). I also still vividly remember getting home from school for the first game, grabbing a home made ice pop, seeing the San Siro in half sun and then the result made it extra special, it just seemed magical.

Anyway, dreamy reminiscing aside, FIFA and other footballing bodies have just saturated the market now. I just don't see that magic anymore. I don't get the sense of occasion, maybe for a long time. I have enjoyed most World Cups but it has been steadily getting worse.

This year it is the perfect storm, corruption to the nth degree, too many matches (a lot are going to very one sided), the enabling of Fascism, problems in Mexico, high prices, doubts over certain fans even being allowed into the country, the list just goes on.

Nothing is like that anymore. Maybe because times have changed, maybe because we are older now and have seen it before.

For mexico 86, we were on holiday in Denmark, and the smell of cigarettes, stale beer, sweat and sun cream combined takes me back.

Loves the intro music myself for brazil 2014.

There was a lot of talk at the time about how low scoring it was so I wasn't surprised that it was still true when I went a double checked before responding. That was the age of serie a being the top league. England was still full of home nations players. Little did we know how things would change so quickly.

Depressing that Ireland have a play-off to qualify for a world cup and I have zero interest and will have zero interest in the tournament whether they go or not. Not the most depressing thing about the state of the world right now, but it's one of them for me
I facilitate a weekly group on Thursdays in our parish and I could easily have rescheduled but decided to leave it as is, and watch the match on record later.

I really hope the lads do well this evening, and am reasonably confident but I have a dread of this WC tournament happening when and where it is given the current climate.

Like you, I suspect, in the past I would have been glued to the coverage of a play-off (which is for a play-off 🤔) but the buzz isn't there for me as in the past.

Symptomatic of a wider malaise in world football, probably.

My only interest, is in how big of a flop it`s going to be and how the fat orange goon, tries to spin it as the best World Cup of all time.

Who the hell would want to go anyway ?

ICE at the airports and at the grounds.
Having to submit your email accounts / social media upon entering the US ( that alone would be enough for me ).
Iran war more than likely still raging.
The grounds and fans making nice juicy targets for terrorist atrocities.
Trump and his goons.
Price gouging of tickets, hotel rooms, hospitality etc on a grand scale.
Players from certain countries now having to submit bonds to keep the Orange Hitler happy.

Nein Danke.

I can foresee how this will pan out : strictly applied for the first 5-10 games, then gradually, not applied. Looking forward to the millions of booking for players surrounding the referee.
