Surely a prosperous economy is good, regardless of the party in charge? If they're delivering, I don't care who it is.

Oh, I'm a pragmatist at heart mate. Although I think a Tory led coalition would have been preferable to an outright majority, for me, personally, a Tory government is probably the best for my wallet, I just don't think it's the best outcome for the country.

The power of a govermnent to effect the economy is fairly limited compared to global forces and companies so, if peoples living standards improve over the next three or four years, the Tories will take credit for something which is pretty much out of their control. Where governments tend to differ is how they deal with the revenue raised on the back of the economy.

I think on balance you're probably correct, my objection is to the risible idea that Labour lost because they were all nice and clean and the Tories were horrible etc - it's utter nonsense. They're both as bad as eachother.

Unfortunately this shows why Liverpool has disdain for the rest of England and no real affiliation with the mouth breathing electorate who wish to be ruled over by utter beauts. Beauts with contempt for the working class and the needy.

I hope Merseyside gets it's own referendum one day. Well done SNP, lead the way.

No, one thing you can say about FPTP (and I am not a big supporter of it) is that it keeps the more extreme, radical and unpleasant parties at bay.

UKIP did do well in the popular vote, but I'm not going to bemoan their lack of seats because they are one of those parties.

In the Republic of Ireland they are plagued with single local issue candidates who scrape in on the umpteenth count and go on to cut a deal with a party cobbling together numbers to run a minority government in exchange for the implementation of that single issue.

I remember one guy in rural Donegal about twenty years ago whose sole platform was a TV transmitter for his district.

He was given it and then helped prop the government up on a series of important issues which he understood nowt about.

To paraphrase Churchill.......FPTP is the worst kind of electoral system.

Of course both sides do it. However, and I'm not saying this is at the instruction of tory HQ, you have to say that the level of smear campaigning from the right wing media far exceeds that if the left (see Sun front pages, Daily Mail tactical voting guide, Telegraph letter to readers).

Sadly it seems most of the parties campaigned in a negative way. There was an analysis done of the leaflets used in the campaign, and how many of them contained a negative message about a rival party. I think Labour had 95% (or there abouts), the Lib Dems >90% and the Tories slightly less (but still far too much) at around 70%.

Not very inspiring stuff.

I don't for a second believe that the ukip are a racist party or have racist policies, they don't.

I do however think a lot of ukip's supporters are racist and that isn't a coincidence. Their policies are attractive to racists without actually being racist.

It's actually been quite nice (for want of a better word) listening to some of the big beasts saying good bye. They all sound decent, congratulating their opponents and so on.

If only they could be this human all the time I'm sure politics would have a much better reputation.
