be happy for him to be eased in if that makes player and manager happier. However, he seems keen to impress and would love for him to really nail down a starting position in the first half of the season...

Think he'll have a bit of a Stones like introduction to the team, I imagine Keane will be the preferred partner for a while, like Distin was, until he plays himself out of the squad, which with Keane won't take long. That way the pressure won't be on Branthwaite as much as the message he'll probably be given is "you only have to be better than this utter useless player that you've watched ahead of you".

The difference was Distin was actually class for a while and his legs went, Keane is just rubbish in general, so it'll be much easier for Branthwaite to break through.

This is probably what will happen in reality. But if he can’t handle starting week 1 he won’t be able to handle starting week 4 or whatever. Just get him out there. The upside is immensely higher and Keane makes a lot of mistakes anyway, so there’s very little downside.

Going to be bitterly disappointed for him when he's deemed to be behind Keane in the pecking order at the start of the season.

What good is a highly successful loan spell if there is no reward for it?

Tarkowski is first pick, ALL others aside from Branthwaite have proven themselves to be terrible centre halves at Premier League level.

He needs to be given a chance to prove himself because all others have had and lost their chances and, more importantly, because he's earned the right.
