I can’t think of a more disastrous piece of business in sporting history.
While not disputing, enjoy this story of the contract handed to baseball player Bobby Bonilla by the New York Mets.

In November 1998, the New York Mets reacquired Bonilla from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for Mel Rojas. Again, his level of play did not measure up to expectations and he had numerous clashes with manager Bobby Valentine over lack of playing time. His tenure in New York culminated in an incident during the sixth game of the 1999 National League Championship Series during which the Mets were eliminated by the Braves in 11 innings while Bonilla reportedly sat in the clubhouse playing cards with teammate Rickey Henderson.

After his subpar 1999 season, the Mets released Bonilla, but still owed him $5.9 million. Bonilla and his agent offered the Mets a deal: Bonilla would defer payment for a decade, and the Mets would pay him an annual paycheck of $1.19 million starting in 2011 and ending in 2035, adding up to a total payout of $29.8 million. Mets owner Fred Wilpon accepted the deal mostly because he was heavily invested with Ponzi scheme operator Bernie Madoff, [not sure if this made news in the UK - American financier, the aptly named Bernie Madoff, defrauded investors of something like $65 billion with a pyramid scheme, was convicted of 150 years in prison, and is now dead. -THBJ] returns he thought he was getting on his investments with Madoff outweighed the eight percent interest the Mets would be paying on Bonilla's initial $5.9 million. As a result, the payout was a subject of inquiry during the Madoff investment scandal investigation when it came to light in 2008.

A few friends are Mets fans who get together for a drink on Bobby Bonilla Day, July 1, the date of the annual payout.

JPG is probably the last of the very poor buys still remaining at the club. However, his Everton career was cut short by injury which could happen to any player at any time.
Allan and Gomes may move this summer but at least they were nearly always involved in the team or on the bench.

I’d rather flush £25m than flush… whatever Pogba cost and lose him for free. I’d say Lukaku to Chelsea last season also worse.

But they’ve actually had a return from Pogba in the form of lots of games. Again Lukaku was crap but played some games and scored some goals. We have paid £25m plus lots of wages for absolutely nothing at all, we genuinely might as well have set fire to that money.

Michael Keane needs to go before this can be claimed. 30 mill for a centre half who can’t turn, shuts his eyes when heading the ball, ducks under crosses, has a clumsy touch, and lashes more balls out of play than he manages to keep in each game.

That can’t be true. I was told he had offers on the table ready to go from 3 European heavyweights or something. That fella who fancied himself some Spanish thick crust said this and he can’t be lying because he was literally in love with Benitez so it’s gotta be true.

He was a Newcastle fan, as confirmed by his final post here from the match thread when we beat them 1-0.

More shots, more shots on target, more passes, better passing accuracy, more corners, better possession, less fouls. They were better than us in every metric. A draw would have flattered us. Be honest, if it wasn't for those extra 15 mins. You would all be fuming with that result as you were at half time.

Gomes was never really all that good and is now close to useless - but Allan is not even remotely in the same conversation. He's older and he needs more rest, or more help in the middle, or both, but he's a good player.

same lad also contributed to keeping us up with the goal against CP which was some finish, he's had so much of an up and down time with us mostly down but some of the form the showed to get England recognition was fairly good , seemed to be a confidence issue with him
