I don't rate him at all but a fair few of my mates think he's a good player and is currently playing in a posistion that is not he's natural posistion and they think I'm being harsh on him. I think he's a lightweight who doesn't really offer much at all but he is someone who has come through the ranks and is a good squad player to have but I think a player bought for he's posistion (and also Right Back) is the first signing/s we should urgently make.
Whether this Southampton bloke is the answer, I really don't know as I know nothing about him.
We have enough lightweights in our midfield

If it was a choice between this feller and a 35-year-old Allan I would still go for Allan every time.

Blandly uninspiring journeyman with a more combative contract negotiation than anything he’s going to do on the pitch?

He can see us coming from miles away can’t he.

The boys hungry, he tasted success at Bayern and wants more.

If he comes here he's coming with an eye on moving up the ladder.

The type of player we should be targeting.

Seems like he cant pass, but hes great at closing down quite high up the pitch, I'm not against it, but he's not the door unlocker we REALLY need IMO.

Very much looking forward to the shift in narrative on here when he goes to Spurs and suddenly Brands is getting slated from pillar to post for missing out on him.

From what I have read outside the Everton online universe I think its significantly more likely that he goes to Spurs. I wouldn't get too excited about this bloke.

We are much more likely to sign Allan.

We need both someone to unlock the door and someone to lock it so hopefully we get 2 in.

it’s a crying shame his face is so unsavoury but he’d be out of our price range if he was a fitty Imo.

Not sure there’s that many midfielders who can do everything these days. Feels like we need some mad dog pressing types to afford an unlocked the time and space they need. At the moment a midfielder like Gomes can’t buy a second to even get his head up in our team.

That's just it. As big of a blert that he is, Graeme Souness has been on about this a lot this season. The game is just full of midfielders who just don't do anything, and unfortunately we have a squad littered with them. I think the cultural change from a midfield 2 to a midfield 3 is probably most responsible for this. Tonnes of midfielders now identify as a 'spare man', they've been coached with very limited responsibility o affect the game in either third, they're just told to make themselves busy. They can't attack, they can't really defend, they can't pass very well. They just sort of get around.

Go back 15-20 years and you had plenty of midfielders who could do absolutely everything. You're lucky these days if you can get one midfielder who specialises at one thing only (Gana and his defensive work for example).

Surprisingly, he makes transfermarkt's list for top 20 accurate crossers in the top 5 european leagues.

Very odd.

Whys a hard pressing DM making crosses?!??!?

Just wanted to give you a Danish perspective to what kind of player you'll be getting in Højbjerg.

To be honest I think he's defensive qualities are highly overestimated, and his offensive qualities grossly underestimated. His leadership qualities are accurate. He is a leader type.

He was brought up at Bayern and given a chance under Guardiola. Would he really flourish in that clubs youth system under that coach, if his offensive passing abilities are as atrocious as the Saints forum seems to suggest?

On the other hand, he didn't lose his spot on the National team because of his lack of offensive capabilities. He lost it because of poor discipline when it came to defensive duties. As I recall he was subsequently dropped from the Southampton starting 11 around the same time as well.

But to his credit he seems to have listened to what his coaches told him, and he bounced back and became starting 11 for Southampton (and captain) as well as back in the National team (he usually play alongside Delaney from Dortmund with Eriksen in front of them in a diamond). What changed? He's much more professional and disciplined and works harder for the team. He doesn't try and play the Barcelona killer pass every time he gets the ball (he did that a lot on the National team) but plays more simple. Also, If you notice him during a game he always wants the ball. He never plays scared. He's never intimidated. And he IS better defensively than he was before - probably due to how Hasenhüttl plays with Southampton. But he is not a classic DM.

I still think though he's overly aggressive sometimes when trying to win the ball and can be quite slow in getting back into position if caught high up on the pitch. The flipside of those impressive ballwinning statistics he has is that he will not always intercept the ball in those mad rushes towards an opponent, often leaving a lot of space behind him and creating a dangerous situation for the opposition.

If you want someone to compare with, I think he's quite a similar player as Gravesen was when he played for you.

I have not looked into it but are the passing stats being quoted based on the start of this season when Southampton were getting ragged everywhere?
