Centre Midfield

Davies chases the ball too much; not enough positional sense. Actually, he might be a victim of the straitjacket formation we've play with for years.
I'm hoping that Delph will bring some much-needed leadership to the midfield, as the senior players there just seem to play their own game, and the younger lads are left to flounder whenever they find themselves out of their depth.

That's why I said it was 'harsh'.

I'm looking at the unit as a whole, though. If Gbamin is the next big success story for the club, we'll be ok. But failing that we look weak in that department. It's like we sleepwalked into this because we were all focussing on how crucial it was to get a CB in during the final days of the window. I'm certainly guilty of it. It never fully registered how paper thin we'd look without Gueye there, and the alarm bells only rang on Saturday against Palace. If they can stroll through the centre of the pitch imagine what good teams will do!
I never saw the game to be honest. We will miss Gueye for sure.
My trouble is how good everyone thinks Gomes is. He's good, but I'm not sure he's top drawer.
Those type get goals aplenty no matter their job on the field.
We have a few decent midfielders but they need to be a better than decent as a unit.

I don't know what you mean by major overhaul. We lost Gueye which is a big blow, and not much could be done about that once he confirmed he wanted to leave. But we brought in 3 quality players including Gomes from last season. Gbamin needs a bit of time to settle in but he is a different type of player to what we had available before and Delph's left foot will give us another variety. We've also brought in an option for Siggy with Iwobi, who I wouldn't be surprised to see operating in a midfield 3 when we play the top teams.

Losing Gana means we'll have to play a different way to last season, but we have a lot more choices now. Given McCarthy and Besic had hardly any minutes last season, we've ended up losing Gana and adding Delph, Gbamin and Iwobi to our midfield options. That's more of an overhaul than any other team in the premier apart from possibly Villa.

Can I ask what were you expecting us to do this window?
Midfield as a unit was a mess last season and is still a mess this season. I don't like the formation much and I don't think its Silva's first choice. I think Siggurdson is a problem for the team and the overall balance in midfield, he's basically a second striker. Bernard looks a squad player to me, not enough assists or goals. Gomes, still to convince that he has was it takes to help us break into the top four. Poor back up from likes of Schneiderlin. What would I've like to have seen? Swerve Delph, he's a decent player but too old and too injury prone, he just looks like a stop gap to me with big wages I'd rather we planned for the longer term. Bring in someone to play alongside Gbamin, like Doucoure, give Gomes a go further upfield to see if he can cut it. Get some decent back up to the three of them, which means Davies and two others. I acknowledge that is a bit to get through.

Nope. Consistently one of our best players since he signed
never said he wasn't mate. Before jan he was considered just a stopper, he went up levels after we knocked back PSG. I know plenty of blues who picked at his faults as much as any player such as his distribution etc

Fair enough mate. I see now that you were not referring to the central midfield specifically, but more to the way we set up as a team.

I agree that Silva, ideally, would prefer to play 433. But when he took over as manager last summer we arguably had only 2 quality players on the books who could fit seamlessly into that system. One of them, Gueye has since left the club and the other, Walcott, has completely lost his mojo in front of goal. We brought in a couple of players last season in Richarlison and Gomes who fit the bill but, with losing Gana, we still only had 2 quality players out of the front 6 to play that system, and we also need at least 2 quality back up. So we effectively needed to bring in 6 new quality players if we were going to be able to switch to 433 as our main formation. I think it's fair to say that is too much to achieve in one window, even if we had an open cheque book which I don't believe we did.

The other issue, as you rightly point out, is Sigurdsson, a high quality player but one that does not fit comfortably into a 433. Not only is he currently our most creative player but we also rely too heavily on him for goals. Silva has to replace his goals amongst our front 3 before we can even think about offloading him. Then he also needs to add more creativity to the midfield 3. Again, this cannot be achieved in a couple of windows.

We have taken steps forward this summer with players like Gbamin, Iwobi and Kean. Had we managed to bring in Zaha and Doucoure on top then you could argue it was job nearly done. But I honestly don't think we were ever close to achieving that.

I think you are spot on in that Delph was brought in as a short term measure, to help oversee the transition from 4231 to 433. I think you'll see a mixture this year. 4231 when we expect to dominate possession and 433 when we expect to play on the counter. It's going to take at least another 2 windows, given that our main transfer priority now is a quality back up central defender, but hopefully we will be there r thereabouts by the end of next summer. I think we've missed out on Zaha now as I believe Chelsea will be in for him possibly in January. But we need a similar goal scoring wide man like Neres or Lozano, plus a couple of midfielders like Sangare. This Jesus lad in January would be amazing if it happened, but that's pure fantasy at the moment.

Basically what I'm saying is that Brands and Silva needed at least 3 summer transfer windows to complete the transformation of this team to what Silva wants. In my opinion we are just about on course to do that and are possibly 3/4 players short of what he needs.

At some stage though, if we are to seriously challenge for the top 4 positions, either our young players need to take the step up to the next level, or we need to start bringing in players of the proven calibre of Zaha for serious money and on serious wages.

...the Echo apparently highlighting that Silva is taking a ‘close look at Dennis Adeniran’ in training with the first team. I had big hopes for him when he joined from Fulham and have taken an interest during his time here. He’s the big, powerful athletic type we’ve needed, but he’s not really kicked on and is very inconsistent within games for the U23s.

If he’s included in a matchday squad, he must be impressing.

I would posit that we knowingly took a gamble on Gbamin (almost an anagram) and Delph was the insurance policy in case Gbamin doesn't get it together in the PL. I could see us going to a flat 3 midfield on saturday to cover for the injuries. The OP was spot on - we are looking very thin in CM after just one game.

Or we are uber desperate...
