Summer Transfer Window 2025 Thread

If last seasons changes are to be replicated, ndiaye came in far narrower allowing for overlapping left full back. That gave more of a goal threat from ndiaye and maybe he wants the same for the right. Mcatee might provide that more than touchline hugging pacey winger?
However you need the correct right back for that scenario.

Patterson flying down the flank on the overlap.

In all seriousness we’re not good enough to build an attacking game around our full backs. I’d rather we just had a solid deep defence that could pass the ball effectively and some pace in attack so we can play either through build up or on a counter.

One of my criticisms of Moyes’ earlier teams was the reliance on Baines at left back as the attacking outlet. It just didn’t work away at top sides who don’t let you play pretty triangles with diminutive number 10s tucking in to spring full backs into space. Average sides got wins at grounds we never could because they just played a low block and scored on the counter with some quick forwards

Yep, I've no issue with slowish playmaker types in wide areas. It's pretty much how he set us up last time he was here. The issue is that you've got to have full backs who can overlap and deliver the ball and we currently don't have them on either side.

That being the case, it's probably almost easier to add a wide player with pace. You can play on the counter more etc

Shared my view before, during and now - that removing them was a mistake.

If it was my club, I'd have given Thelwell/Purdy a go with some money - we were definitely in for the likes of Gyokeres, Kudus, Wesley, Minteh, Elanga, Ekitike - but it was always £0 upfront or loan, and 'come and play for Dyche/point deduction FC lad' or relying on someone else moving as part of the arrangement.

Instead, we've... well, I'm not actually sure what we've done;

But they were given the January transfer window and the players they wanted to bring in were rejected by 2 managers during that time.

I have a degree of Sympathy for thelwell. He had a tough time of it while he was here but i dont think he did enough to stay in the job.

TFG were pretty quick to get rid of him and him ending up at rangers says alot to me.

Hey guys what a great Friday story! We now got footballer names we’ve never heard of before to speculate about all weekend before Everton never sign them! Perfect, let’s YouTube and pretend to be scouts.

Dib Dib Dib!

Yeah very true about lack of overlapping fullbacks. Myko is happy to try, but his crossing is so much worse than Baines was.
Goal against Newcstle showed it working though, but we definitely don't have it at right back.

So your saying our football recruitment staff had players lined up in Jan, and Moyes knocked them on the head? Only aware of Tom Fellows and Wesley as being lined up in Jan before we turned away.

Id take Wesley now, and wouldn't be surprised if we signed Fellows this window.

Personally can't see Moyes paying too much attention to what the new transfer committee folk say.

You also need absolutely rapid DMs and CBs to play this way as the wide playmaker and full back will nearly always be ahead of the ball if caught in possession. The only time we’ve done this effectively was 13/14 when McCarthy was covering Coleman going forward and Distin basically covered an entire flank himself. We don’t have any pace in defensive midfield or at CB so i agree it would just be easier to attack with a quick front four and leave the defenders and holding mids behind the ball most of the time.

Him and Piennar were fantastic together on the left hand side as I remember, in fact it was quite possibly the strongest part of the Moyes team.
