The CL isn’t invite only.

And the winners of the club World Cup only qualified for the Conference league in the season just gone. Same way as the credibility of the champions league is less than the old European Cup as many Champions league winners were not even champions

• To be honest it’s about time there was some expectation on this £1.5 billion squad they’ve assembled.

• I've just been reading up on the FIFA Intercontinental Cup which is a name change of the former version of the FIFA Club World Cup which we won in 2020 - it is the same trophy, apparently according to FIFA, the winners of that will hold the crown of 'world champions' for the next calendar year (The 'annual' world champions). So we don't have to wait 4 years, In 17 months we can be world champions again. Chelsea have only won the overhyped, bloaty, tinpot 4-year version.

• I don't count it as serious trophy, goes in the bag with the Charity Shield and the Super Cup. I realise the money is a lot more these days but then it's tainted money isn't it.

It has an appalling standard until the KO stages. Then it gets to about a level below what we saw in the CWC this past month until it reaches the SF stage.

The point being made is that if we deny credibility to the CWC then we do so to the (apparently) 'credible' CL.

The Premier League is an invite too - mostly to teams who didn't get relegated plus teams who were promoted. That competition gave up on legitimate competitors decades ago with it now being the plaything of oil states and venture capitalists.

It has a mixed standard with some teams stinking out the gaff and others being good.
