I was more surprised to realise he's been playing on his scholar deal whilst eligible for a pro for the past near full 2 years - Sep birthdate.
Maybe the club and wider football world are just nowhere near as high on him because that's a really long time to leave him 'unprotected' and an equally long time for the player to hold out if it was from his side.

I’m assuming from the others this year that we’re doing 2 years almost as standard.
I think Thomas is the best centre back prospect we’ve had in years come through the academy. Nothing like our usual types (Feeney/Tierney - arguably now Davis) in that he can really play and he’s physical. I just don’t know if he’s got the right bite to play top level. We’ll see how he fills out/if he can adjust to the speed of the step up.
Best modern centre back we’ve produced for a long time I’d say.

There was a theme a while back that all or most Scholars were guaranteed a pro deal, Thomas would have needed a 3 year deal if he’d signed at 17 to guarantee 1 year at u21 level. The 2 year deal now guarantees him 2 years at u21s , he may have lost out on a bit of money but his chances of progressing here or elsewhere are enhanced.
