Travel thread 3.0

Hi folks,

Am looking to head over to USA in August for 2 or 3 weeks and thinking of going East Coast , Boston, New York, Philadelphia and then Washington! Will be going with my french husband so looking at stuff that he might like and as Irish myself going to Boston etc 😁 Any suggests of less non tourist stuff to do ? Would we be better driving? What's cool 1 day stops between each city etc? I've never been to USA so want to try everything 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I did the East Coast afew years a go. We used the American equivalent of national express buses between cities rather than drive.
We flew into Toronto to do Niagara Falls then flew into Boston.
I just followed the ex wife as she had a list of things she wanted to do but it was a great holiday. Just very expensive, busy and noisy.
Boston and Philadelphia are a bit more chilled but we were still glad of a week just chilling by the pool at the end of the holiday in Fort Lauderdale.

Mrs C and I are back from 10 days in Peurto Pollensa, Majorca, we really like it for a beach holiday. She is coeliac and has to be very careful in restaurants, we have no problem eating out in Peurto Pollensa. Only issue we had was that we seemed to always end up close to English people whore voices seem to carry a long way.
Heading to Boston later in the year, as always any advice or travel tips would be appreciated.

Might be interesting for your husband that Maine still has a small French speaking area (Acadia in the far north of the state) but Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor are also lovely destinations. Enjoyed Boston and Philadelphia more than New York and Washington.
Typical food: clam chowder in New England, cheesesteak sandwich in Philadelphia. Deli sandwiches in New York (pastrami on rye, for example).

Anyone been to Seminyak in Bali? I'm going next month...what beach clubs should I go to?

And should I book tours pre going? Or wait until I'm there?

Thanks
Seminyak is great, you made the correct choice avoiding Kuta as that is just full of drunken Aussie bogans.
Ku de Ta is a fantastic beachside bar, very trendy but probably the most expensive bar in Bali. Potato Head is also very popular.

There are a lot of spots on the beach where you can just grab a seat on one of the oversize beanbags and get beer brought to you. These are normal bar prices rather than the more expensive kudeta.
In the town Lucky day sports bar is a good option, and there are a few others on the same street if you want to mix it up a bit.

Frankensteins laboratory is a fantastic night out, I would recommend pre-booking for dinner and the make up (check them out on facebook and you will see what I mean).

As for tours, the main place people go is Ubud and the paddy fields, no need to pre-book, you can hire a taxi to be your personal driver for the day for very reasonable prices. Talking of taxis, Bluebird is the best option, all the others will try and charge you a comparitive fortune - always insist they put the meter on

Oh, almost forgot - La Luciola do the absolute best coffee granita I have ever had, food is great too but you would probably need to book ahead (ask for an upstairs table)

My missus went there about 18mths back on a work trip. Think she flew to Paris and changed flight there. All fine when work pays. Apparently an utterly beautiful city.
Am booked. Easy Jet fly direct from Manchester now, which made it so much easier. Heading over to Ljubljana first week in December, few nights there and will drive up to Maribor to see friend. Really looking forward to it. Any recommendations for Ljubljana greatly appreciated, I believe the Xmas Markets will be on then too.

Just back from a 3 night stay in Belfast.

Titanic Museum is well worth a visit.

Taxi ('troubles and murals') tour was fantastic, brilliant and knowledgeable cabbie who talked me through the complicated geography.

The housing was exactly the same in the Shankill and Falls, only the flags and murals were different.

Everyone we met could not have been more friendly and helpful.

Figuring out what to do this weekend, I first checked trains to London – Ā£143 return, ouch! So I switched to looking at flights from Birmingham, anywhere really, and landed on Budapest. Got a flight out for Ā£50 and back to EMA for just Ā£20! That means I'll only have Friday night and Saturday to enjoy Budapest, but I'm looking forward to it. Just need to find a decent place to get my head down.

What is everyone's 'go to' site for checking flights? Trawl through each budget airline or Skyscanner or something? Obvs Skyscanner doesn't include baggage/seat selection prices.

For me it’s skyscanner, more out of habit rather than anything else. Google Flights is one that’s recommended a lot though.

You should try Italy. They, possibly like Spain, are streets ahead of us with Gluten Free foods.

Booking flights is a nightmare these days. Basic price of the flight doesn't really mean anything unless you get on the flight carrying absolutely nothing except the clothes you have on. Once you add in hand luggage, checked luggage selecting a seat etc. etc. it soon adds up. Then there is myriad of different options that you need a PhD in mathematics to figure out the most cost effective option to choose whether it is economy, economy plus etc. etc.
