Yeah but if you think about it, the handrail would be there whether it was top or bottom!

Its at the bottom as the way its wedged in, it would fall down if at the top. Plus carpet wear.

Surely the wear and tear on stairs should be pretty even. Unless people just go up and down the first couple of steps.

Correct, unless the carpet hasn’t been laid properly. The carpet on the risers is usually nipped in under the overhang of the tread, these are flat.

The handrail would look the same no matter which way up you are looking at the stairs!

Either way. The mattress is at the bottom!!
