2024/25 David Moyes

Heroes win trophies for me

At 36 I’ve seen plenty of Everton talismans, icons, stars, good players but never a hero or a legend when I compare to what my dad got to see

I’d take a league cup or a stupid Europa conference league all day long though! Anything!
This is a great post. I am lucky (in Everton terms) to be older than you. I'm 53. You have summed up my position on "legends" and succinctly presented the sad reality of the generation of fans that followed mine. Your post is notable for its clarity - it's much harder for younger fans to measure greatness when they haven't actually seen it.

The curse of being older is that none of the more recent players measure up. As much as I respected and admired people like Leighton Baines, Phil Jagielka, and Tim Cahill - all really good players - the reality is they operated in an era where great players simply did not see Everton as a destination. And all romantic notions of loyalty aside, if they were truly great they would have done a Rooney.

Everton "icons" are not what they used to be, I'm afraid.

Tbf, our hands are still tied financially. I look forward to the day when we can make transfers like the RS and others in the big 6 right out of the gate. Given the money we have, I guess it’s so far so good and we’ll see if we can get the best price for the best available player soon. It sucks watching the best get better and the rest getting marginally better.

Relegation looms with Ol´David in charge.

Went so well for you the last 48 times you’ve said it hasn’t it. So well that you had to disappear for 4 months afterwards.

He doesn’t care about your club. He is just here for a fat paycheck. He will relegate you lot and not have a care in the world, just like when he relegated Sunderland.
He will walk into a new job while you lot get to entertain the likes of Preston North End in that fancy new stadium of yours.

We never really had that many during Kendall peak tbf. Gary lineker was possibly the highest profile that other clubs were after. Many of that great league winning side were not players we fought off competition for. I remember Ian Snodin snubbing liverpool over Everton.
Its a good discussion this though. I managed to see Everton winning titles and cups. From 88/89 onwards though its mainly been crap. The only decent side ive seen since has been Moyes side of baines/pienaar/arteta/cahill etc etc. Even taking into account Joe Royles cup win.
