One game left at Goodison. One last dance on the old girl’s turf before we leave for The Big Dick on the Dock .
And who do we get? Southampton. Already relegated. On paper, a walk in Stanley Park. But we know better, don’t we?

This has got all the ingredients for a textbook Everton moment:

• Emotionally charged occasion?
• Opposition with nothing to play for?
• Fans desperate for a happy ending?
• Inevitable defensive mix-up in the 83rd minute? Dear God, please no.

I am begging, no, pleading with you the team: don’t do it. Don’t give us one last 90-minute identity crisis. Don’t make the last goal at Goodison a Southampton scuffed tap-in. We can’t have “Cameron Archer (89’)” etched into folklore.

Instead, give us a send-off. Give us limbs in the Gwladys. Give us something to tell our grandkids that doesn’t start with “you’ll never believe how we managed to lose that one…”
