F1 2025 (and other motorsports)

Lando doing something dumb every week is really funny at this point. There is one car that can beat him. Keep that car behind you. Don't battle Max when Max can't beat you.

Next time out he will do the exact same dumb thing in a different way.
Taking a long time to learn his craft isn't he? Maclaren could have won that race with an extra pit stop and still won, but he was impatient on the first corner.

Brilliant first half of the race, great driving from Piastri again. He just seems smarter than Norris in wheel to wheel combat. Still a good race overall from him too.

To be fair Max locked up which made the pass relatively easy for Piastri in the end. From that point on Max knows he can't brake that late again and adapts and doesn't make the same mistake twice, like the elite driver he is. It was always going to be harder for Norris to get past from that point onwards, plus he has the history with Max which makes it that little bit more sweaty.

I think he still has a good shout at the title this year but at this moment Piastri is the one getting it done.

True, I feel Norris isn’t as comfortable in combat with him but I also thought Piastri was expecting Max to brake late and make a cut back to overtake.

I imagine he's less comfortable because he's got history with Verstappen, which ultimately is going to effect how you drive around someone. Piastri doesn't really have that history yet, I think last race was the first time there's been any kind of controversy between Piastri and Verstappen, whereas just last season there were numerous incidents with Norris and Verstappen.

I think the main error was not tucking in behind Lap 1, in hindsight their pace would have won them the race regardless but he's also had lots of grief about being too passive with Max.

It's just so dumb. Did you qualify ahead of Oscar? Yes? Ok then just be patient, wait until it stretches out a little, pick everyone off one by one and win.

They are racing drivers and he could have made the pass without Max having an oversteer moment on the entry to T2 which pushed him wide and forced Lando to avoid him. There is a big advantage to be gained from clearing Max straight away whilst your team mate remains in 4th. Also, McLaren didn't know going in that they would be this much faster than everyone, quicker? Sure, but not the dominance we saw today. Then you factor in things like safety cars and weather potentially nullifying your long run pace advantage and you're left with a split second decision whilst side by side with a potential title rival as to whether to go for an overtake or not... all whilst knowing there is a narrative around you being too passive with Max.

It's not so obvious/dumb as you make out. Hindsight is a hell of a thing. If Max doesn't have that oversteer moment on the entry to T2 maybe he gets past him or at worst stays in second place. He lost places because of Max's oversteer.

Good race. My kid hates Lando at least as much as you do, by the way.

I don't hate him it is just frustrating watching a guy do the same things over and over.

He was aggressive in a moment that he didn't need to be. He continues to do this. Miami is a track with plenty of overtaking spots. It's not Suzuka where you actually need to be ahead at that spot. He miscalculated, yet again, and despite having at least as much pace is now falling out of his big chance to win a World Championship.

He's not falling out of anything, the season has barely begun. Hamilton was a notoriously slow starter and worse drivers than Norris have won championships and he will be in the sport for a long time to come.

You only think it was unnecessary because you have the benefit of hindsight knowing their car was way faster than Red Bull today. If Max doesn't oversteer no one criticises the move.

Imola up next and that's one of his best tracks, needs a good showing, preferably pole.

I don't think many people had Oscar down to be winning three consecutive races so early in the season. Brilliant form from him, and he appears to have a killer instinct with his teammate does not possess, alongside top racecraft. If that hadn't happened in Melbourne he'd be about 35 points clear already in the championship.

As much as I enjoy following him and cheering on the McLarens, I don't want the sport to get bottle boring with them essentially doing a Red Bull and dominating for half a decade, so I'm pleased the new regulations are kicking in next season which will hopefully tighten up the pack.

At least if McLaren dominate they have two drivers who are very closely matched, if Red Bull have the best car then it's one driver domination similar to Merc once Rosberg left.
