Verstappen just saying in the presser that he doesn't see why he should get punished today when he didn't get done in Brazil!!

And that's what happens when you don't apply the rules

Yeah was just going to say the same thing. When you don't apply the rules to him, he's just empowered to carry on ignoring them. It's the type of character he is - petulant.

He'll take out Hamilton next GP if he's confident he won't be DQ'd for it, or if he thinks a DQ will hand him the title anyway. Because again it is who he is.

With Max saying "F1 more about penalties than racing" shows that too

There wont be a penalty, it's an odd incident, i can see it from both perspectives.

It was strange how Hamilton didn't just overtake him, I know he wasn't aware that Max had been told to slow down but he had plenty of time to react as the slowing down was very obvious and gradual to begin with, he could have easily just drove past him but instead he slowed down and matched Verstappens speed which possibly suggests some kind of tactics from both of them involving who gets the DRS (something Hamilton mentioned in his interview).

On the other hand why did Max slow down so much and for so long ? it looks from the replays that he stopped more abruptly once Hamilton was right behind him but without telemetry its hard to say. Verstappen fans will say why did Hamilton even get that close to his rear in the first place when he could have just driven straight past.

Unless the telemetry says otherwise im pretty certain it will slapped wrists for both at most.

A few reasons I think.

One, it's all happening pretty quick and it's plausible Hamilton simply couldn't comprehend what was happening in the moment.

Two, Verstappen is known for being aggressive - he was swinging the car right to left while slowing down, at a narrow part of the track. Hamilton, sensibly, would have second thoughts of being any part of that.

Three, if he suspected a brake check, which would have went through his mind instantly, he'd have been waiting for Verstappen to speed up again (which, by the way, Verstappen did - it wasn't a smooth slow down; he broke, then sped up, then broke again.)

It was, at the very last second, a sudden brake by Verstappen that caused the collision, as he went from easing off to basically slamming on, which I'm sure the telemetry will show as it's very visible with the naked eye.

It was basically a less fluid version of this (about 50 seconds in)

In this exchange they are just feathering the throttle, the closing speed is not dangerous.

I don't think Max deliberately brake tested Lewis today, but he did try to play the system by slowing right at that point to gain DRS activation for the next straight, and imo he should be penalised for dangerous driving. Yes, Hamilton could have squeezed by, but Max was also doing his weaving in the middle of the straight thing. Very dangerous. Between that incident, the liberties he took rejoining the track at the 1st restart, and the incident that he was actually already punished for, he fully deserves aa grid penalty. It's not an acceptable level of driving.

Unless im reading it wrong this is good news for Verstappen. Shows no brake inputs and only lifts of throttle. It did look like he braked but telemetry does not lie.

Id say Max is very much on the same level as Hamilton and even has the edge on him when it comes to raw 1 lap pace. The fact a 37 year old Hamilton is able to match and better a generational talent like Verstappen is very impressive.
This race in particular has highlighted that those two are the best in the field by at least slight margin, in my opinion.

It’s difficult to properly judge them, but Leclerc, Russel, Norris and maybe Gasly have the potential to challenge both next year providing they have competitive cars.

The brake throttle flatlines just after the 5000m mark. The speed is secondary as they're going roughly the same pace and it only takes a miniscule drop.

If you look at the speed line, that little bump where Verstappen has sped up and then lifts off abruptly is the killer.

I've drawn a red line to demonstrate the exact point which is the issue.

In an F1 car you can stop from 200mph to 0mph in about 65 meters, so when they talk about brake testing, you don't need to hit the brakes, just merely lifting the throttle from top speed causing pretty big retardation in speed...the lack of braking input from telemetry doesn't exonerate him from the charge of "brake testing". We saw a few laps later exactly why Verstappen did what he did where he did, as he lifted slightly to let Lewis through at the end of the straight and then immediately got back past him on DRS. It was utter bullcrap and makes a mockery of the instruction to yield the position.

I hope Verstappen doesn't take him out.
The season deserves a proper battle for the lat race.

Though I feel Hamilton will need to get away quick and lead. Or the temptation for Verstappen might just be too much for his hot headedness.

I always feel as though this kind of penalty is pointless. It just serves no pint whatsoever. Better to make it a stop and go in the next race. Then it is a proper deterrent.
