2025/26 David Moyes

Boyland today confirming that even after James Smith is in post, Moyes is both providing specific profiles and has the final say on all transfers. Insane to have your manager (a short-term position) be the most important voice in the room on transfers (a long-term decision) anyway, but particularly insane at the start of a huge rebuild when his CV on transfers is this:

Of players signed since summer 2020, the only two players they sold for a profit are Kudus (great) and Downes (for about 5m profit). EVERYONE else was a loss, left on a free, or is still there and part of a relegation-threatened squad. That's such an awful record, regardless of how many were him and how many were the DoF. Moyes is a perfectly solid Prem manager and was a really good choice to steady the ship for the transition to the new owners. Handing him the keys to the transfer rebuild is absolutely mental though.

Today's press conference, Moyes is a bit annoyed that he is being questioned on his comments after Newcastle and doesn't like the questions that Guilia Bould asked, he seemed to close her down quickly and basically say it is what it is.

Dyche beat Newcastle 3-0 with lesser player than we have now.

Moyes needs to change his mentality quickly otherwise he will be hounded out.

This is what i hated last time he was in charge, kept saying plucky Everton and knife to a gun fight etc.

I am bored
Everton spent ~£110-130M this summer depending on which figures you believe.
Everton lost players totalling ~£60M also this past summer.

newcastle subbed on £173M of players on Saturday evening. Both their CM's cost £40M, our two were £8M Garner and £0 psr work around Tim Iroegbunam.

I am also bored of the status quo. We have improved significantly in terms of the squad in the past 6 months, but there is a vast amount of room for further improvement. The expanded revenues from the BMD move, the pay offs of sponsors and none football events will take time to come through on the balance sheet.
Incremental progress.

He promoted several to the first team training squad 2-3 weeks ago, so he must think some have the capability or why do it.
If there’s two reserve keepers we may as well just reduce one of the subs as the chance of them playing is zero.
Do you think it’s better to have two reserve keepers as opposed to somebody who in an emergency could play outfield?
rio ferdinand and Phil Jagielka have both had to put the gloves on in a match and have both made penalty saves. In such a situation, do you want your expanded bench to have the final straw GK to come on for you or is risking it all for the sake of including some 20 year old sort of midfielder that likely wont play unless we're 4-0 up.
With the state of the dead ball tactics currently, and the rushing of goal keepers during the dead ball deliveries, I can see a GK injured in a game this season.

Totally agree, but. If you’d just bought a house, knowing that the living room windows were smashed, the back door hanging off its hinges and the roof was missing tiles, would you prioritise spending your remaining money on planting a very expensive shrubbery, that might flourish in a couple of years ?

Unless there is recognition of what we need right now, purchases for the future are pretty meaningless.

To have Ndaye and Grealish, but not address the basics of what was actually required to make them effective, is brain dead planning. The answer was never Coleman, Barry, Myko, J o’B, Patterson, or Beto.

Or Dibling. That must have been someone’s ego trip. Hopefully, whoever made those decisions, doesn’t get to make any more.
Tried very hard for Tete, and almost got a swap with Patterson. Got Aznou in. It's not like the full backs positions were brazenly overlooked for a laugh or through hubris.

Has a third specialist goalkeeper EVER come on in any top level game in English footballing history? I can’t think of one. I asked ChatGPT and they couldn’t even come up with an example of a third player going in goal in the same game AT ALL in the Prem for almost 20 years. I would definitely rather have a young outfield player who would only come on in the event we were 4 up, than another keeper who will only come on in the event of the apocalypse.

Pity we didn't get Tete or someone similar.

The transfer window opens in 29 days.

There should be a right back lined up to come in from day 1 of it given the current injuries even if on loan.

Time = points.

Neither a 3rd goalkeeper or a random 8th outfield bench option is ever coming on in any game state.

Everton beat Newcastle at St James’ last season and drew at home, while Newcastle were flying high in the league. Moyes comments about their superiority as an excuse for our butts getting whipped doesn't make any sense. Do we take it as a failure or plucky little Everton got shown where they belong? Today it’s Bournemouth, will it be plucky little Everton today?
We'll be plucky little Everton every time we lose. That's the David Moyes playbook. When it comes to press conferences, he's Dyche with a less ridiculous voice.

Some ai response recently told me Sonny Liston was terrified of Iron Mike Tyson. Iron Mike was 3 years old when Liston died. It's worth being careful when trusting the robots that seems quite prepared to tell you anything it guesses you want to hear/read.

They're ALL already making noises about how bad the January window is, about how players don't often fancy a mid winter move and how clubs aren't always keen to sell because replacements are more difficult to get in. The summer is different because contracts are up and deals can be made to undercut other clubs.
With how difficult a lot of clubs make the summer window look to make signings, I can see the added hassle of competitive games in January and dealing with training and media commitments and travel making contract discussions and such ever more of a nightmare.

In English football history two goalkeepers needing to be substituted off, or replaced due to red cards, for the same team has happened twice: Swindon Town vs Manchester United in 1994 and in the league cup match between Bristol Rovers and Southampton in 1992.

So, let's make sure that this incredibly rare event is adequately covered for?
