2025/26 Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall

Really happy we signed him, needed a player with his composure on the ball in midfield for while. The only annoying thing is that him through the middle sort of forces Ndiaye over to the right, and I do think sometimes we'd benefit from having Alcaraz as the 10 instead. But that said, when he plays like he did yesterday, I sort of get why Moyes is very reluctant to drop him, he presses so well and looks after the ball even better.

Formation is getting the best out of him now. No more running all over the pitch completely isolated as a 10. Combinations from Garner at 6 to KDH inside left 8 and Grealish out wide also work. If we can get Rohl or Alcaraz upto speed as the right sided number 8 to play next to him we might be in business in midfield for the first time in a long time.
Maybe Gueye's suspension and Rohl's injury presents and opportunity to try him deeper. Not against Newcastle, like.

I'd love to see at some point this season, him playing deeper, Ndiaye through the middle, Grealish left, and Dibbling on the right.

Having Grealish so capable and trusted as an option to find and look for the run of has helped him immensely. I believe he'd be curtailed significantly without JG there. Oh how we'd be so much more improved with Baines or Digne in at LB moving the ball about accurate and quick.

I don’t want to see us going back to having two deep holding midfielders in a 4231 again. We’re two wins in a row playing a midfield three with one holding player and two attacking mids ahead of him. KDH is brilliant in that left sided attacking 8 position. Hopefully Rohl or Alvarez could play the other right sided 8. We don’t have the players for 4231.

TBF he wasn't. It's subtle, because he likes to get forward from midfield anyway, but you can tell from the position on the pitch of the other two centre mids and, to a lesser extent, the defensive shape. We set up as a 433 yesterday, as we did against Fulham.

Appreciate it can be hard to tell sometimes, but there's definitely a difference around starting positions between the early stages of last night and the Fulham game Vs most of the other games we've lined up this season.

I'm glad that both of you watched the last couple of games and could see where KDH was playing.

It's a strange scenario when ive been seeing KDH as a 10 being totally ineffective and when moved deeper the motm 2 games running...yet im told nothing has changed in his position.

I wonder what posters think 'magically' happened for KDH to suddenly become a different player lol

Lad is a good player, I was calling to sign him before he was even linked.

I know Moyes gets stick for wanting ‘Prem proven’ players, but only him and Grealish have really looked the part from the new signings.

TBF Zat, I'm in the middle here as I think you were going OTT about him when he was playing as the 10. I would still prefer what KDH was giving as the number 10 over Alcaraz, but where we do agree is that KDH has started the last two games as a number 8 in a 433 and he's been better for it.

The formation suits all our midfielders better.

Gana wants to chase the ball and isn’t suited to being in a double pivot. He’s been better as an 8.

Garner doesn’t suit the double pivot either but is much better as the single 6. There were times when we had 11 last night when he was in the back line as a CB stepped out higher up the pitch. That’s years of academy training in that position that he does that by default.

It also suits KDH loads better and has produced his best two performances for us. It’s imperative now Moyes doesn’t switch back given Gana’s suspension, he just needs to drop Iroegbunam or Alcaraz into that position and keep the formation the same.

I'd give KDH a rating of 9/10 for his last 2 games in a 433.

Prior to that I'd rate him perhaps at 6 or 7/10 at most as a 10.

This is the reason perhaps I'd be seen as being OTT (?) and I'll gladly accept that as I know how good he could be alongside Garner.

With Alcaraz, the games hes started as a 10 and even when he's been used as a 10 as a sub there is a cutting edge which isnt evident when using KDH.

I'm not locked into Alcaraz starting long term if we brought in a different type of midfielder or a superior player - though can see he's the current best option there aside from perhaps Dibling who we have seen even less of.
