No doubting Andorra and the Faroes would get killed. But several nations in UEFA who miss out on the Cup would qualify with ease within CONCACAF. The Ireland side who lost through the auspices of Henry's hand comes immediately to mind. Comparing the two on a competitive level is like comparing the Sun Belt to the Big East in American college basketball. There is a vast gulf in quality and depth between the two.
No one would disagree with that statement. Well, no one with reason.
But I believe TX Bill's point is that there are some folks saying stats are "inflated" by playing in CONCACAF, but there are some countries that could also "inflate" European numbers - countries like the Faroe Islands, hell, even Azerbaijan. Minnows are minnows.
It is a misnomer to assume countries in CONCACAF are pounding goals and assists home. I cannot begin to describe to you the frustration of the general technique of the smaller countries: PARK THE BUS.
In years past we had games against minnows like Barbados in the first round of qualifying. But the new qualifying structure lets them play with one another and gives the higher ranked teams in CONCACAF a pass. So we end up with groups with: USA, Jamaica, Guatemala, Antigua/Barbuda, Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Canada, Cuba, Honduras and a couple of others that I can't remember.
Other than a couple of those teams, the vast majority are no longer pushovers. The US, Mexico should win those games. But I can't describe to you how often we see 11 people behind the ball playing for a draw and then playing for a bad ref decision at home or a fluke goal. These games are not won 8-0. They are typically an extremely hard fought 2-1, 1-0, etc with the US trying to find a way through 11 men. We should do it, but sometimes it ain't easy.
Let me put it to you this way: Mexico was in danger of not making it out of the Gold Cup semi-finals (they squeaked, and I mean squeaked, into the 2010 World Cup). They went to extra periods in a 0-0 game - I think against Honduras or El Salvador, can't remember. They worked hard against Guatemala to win in another game in the group stage. The US got beat for the first time by Panama in like ever in the group stage.
So to say stats are "inflated" doesn't quite understand how CONCACAF functions and hasn't seen the misery and excitement of qualifying here. Qualifying through this region IS easier than others, but to say teams will qualify "with ease" or it's a "cakewalk" isn't quite accurate.
That's our point.
