Carlo Ancelotti In Merseyside

Carlo Ancelotti has arrived in Merseyside for further talks with Everton, according to Sky Sports.

The Guardian reported earlier today that Everton had held positive discussions with Ancelotti and Sky Sports news are now claiming the 60-year-old has arrived in Merseyside and claim Ancelotti is Everton’s number one choice with current interim boss Duncan Ferguson remaining part of the first-team coaching staff, should the Italian be appointed.

The 60-year-old has lifted three Champions League trophies over the course of his managerial career and won the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Community Shield during his tenure at Chelsea from 2009 until 2011.

When you consider that he’s won more competitions in his managerial career (since 1995) than we have as club in our entire history, it provides me with optimism.

I also look at his average win percentages at all his clubs – see one of my previous posts – and it is again brings me with some optimism that he can nurture us.

Am I looking solely at the FA Cup? No, I am looking at him progressing in the league, entering Europe and challenging the club as we develop our overall status.

But if winning the FA Cup is the first milestone, then you know what, I would be happy with that. We have tasted success since ’95, which is far, far too long.
I agree the win percentages are good. But this is easily the least talented squad he’s managed in 20 years. The balance of talent is so skewed in football that it’s fair to question whether managers who succeed at those clubs near the top are capable of doing it when they do not have the players to dominate everyone they play.

Is there an argument to be made that he did more with those squads than anyone else so that’s evidence enough of his talent? Yeah that’s fair. I’m just concerned that it’s a bad fit for the squad we have and more importantly the long term prospects of the club. But it looks like the long term doesn’t have any real planning so maybe just trying to win now at all costs is worthwhile.

Regardless of how it goes I’ll be behind it. Just give me some time and I’ll get there.

You’re basically hitching your wagon for the next two years on him being able to win the FA Cup, a single elimination knockout competition where one slice of poor luck, such as drawing away to the RS, can end that. Hopefully he wins a cup and raises the profile is a low percentage play.

  20.
I understand the concerns because of his age, but Carlo is in a totally different league of manager than Pellegrini: he’s arguably in the top echelons of the game.

Equally, I understand the principle of having a manager who is part of a long-term project, building the club over the time, however I also see his long-term merits.

As a club, we have been stagnant for far too long and have only came relatively close to any actual success (one final, a few semis etc.) rather than taste it.

If he is able to bring us a trophy, it could be a catalyst for attracting new talent, raise our profile and revitalise the fan base, which in turn will attract a new manager.

We need something to get us going again, and I feel that Carlo could be the man to do that.

Right so what had Ancelotti done in the last 2 decades to suggest he will be the one to do it? Taking over mega clubs with the most talented squads does not suggest he is going to be able to succeed when he takes over a team with something like the 8th most talent. I mean Napoli is probably player for player like 3rd in Italy and he struggled. It just feels like the wrong fit.

I kind of get the pessimism here but there’s surely more upside than downside with an appointment like this. He’s one of the biggest names in the business with an incredible CV, I think the idea is it’ll put us on the map so to speak.

It will give the club much more exposure, will surely help attract a better calibre of player and may even attract a better level of sponsorship to the club.

If he manages to stabilise the club and get us in and around the top 6 in a season or two before handing the reins to someone else with the club in a much better position, then it will have been a success.

Moise Kean could also benefit massively here too. A father figure type manager and a fellow countryman should be just what he needs here so I wouldn’t give up on him just yet either.

Sky reporting this deal being done “in principal” suggests he’s there and it’s true because they would look unbelievably stupid and lose a lot of credibility (yeah but they don’t have any of that anyway blah blah blah) if they’ve got it wrong.

I initially agreed with you but the more I think about it, how far are we really off of the “top 4-6”? Talent and depth wise we can’t be that far away Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs, all who we got a result against in the last couple of weeks.

I really think that Silva was just a terrible manager, who massively underachieved. He set us up to play his preferred style of football irregardless of the opponent, and lacked the ability to make any mid-game adjustments. He also couldn’t motivate a paper bag.

A pragmatic and inspirational manager should be able to get a tune out of this squad. Hell we just got a point at Old Trafford with Davies and Holgate as our CMs.

A pragmatic and inspirational manager should be able to get a tune out of this squad. Hell we just got a point at Old Trafford with Davies and Holgate as our CMs.

  162. So that goat botherer Balague says he’s not on Merseyside, are we to believe Sky on this one?

  163. Carragher can’t believe that we’re in talks to sign him. But then goes into say, I don’t think he’s the right man as at other clubs he hasn’t had to rebuild. So what then Jamie, lets go back and hire Moyes and revert to plucky little Everton? This is the calibre of manager, Moshiri should have been looking at when he took over. Get it done Everton!!!!

Ancelotti swings both ways – maybe he’ll come, maybe he won’t!

  168. Italians all love motorsports, so if Unsy and Bill take him on a night out to the TeamSport Go Karting then he is sure to sign. If we really want to sway him they could take him out for an all he can eat meal at Nandos afterwards!

  169. To be fair to Alan Myres even when he was working for Sky in the summer and his colleagues were pushing the £75m bids for Zaha he was adamant we weren’t gonna sign him and he was right. Turns out we’d made a bid which was turned down and that was it. Sky were convinced we wanted him and were prepared to paying up to £75m for him.

  170. Ancelotti will defo turn us down.

We’ll end up appointing Corbyn then drop down the footballing pyramid before being declared bankrupt and disbanding in embarrassment.

    It’s how we operate.

  174. I reckon he’ll be a confirmed signing (subject to a medical) by sun down tomorrow evening.

But then of course, the medical will drag on until early January, at which stage Carlo pulls out and we install the Ebbrell-Ferguson axis on a 3 month deal.
