“We expect more”

Fabian Delph has admitted Everton “weren’t good enough” following their 2-0 defeat to Sheffield United, and has called on his teammates to “have a good look in the mirror”.

In quotes from MailSport, Delph said: “The manager always ends up coming under a lot of pressure, but us players need to have a good look in the mirror and look at each other.

“I hate losing. I have three little girls and cannot let them win anything. I’m a nightmare.

“But you get your frustration out, you speak about the game individually to people and collectively. Now we focus on Sheffield Wednesday.

“We weren’t good enough. We planned well all week and it didn’t click. It is a big club with a lot of history and we expect more from ourselves.

“The fans always turn up and they have made their feelings clear.”

  1. We spend over the odds to watch this expensively assembled team yet it doesn’t play with the same passion and endevour that it did under moyes.
To many of these players simply stroll through the game with complete indifference towards the fans so yes we deserve so much better.

….it’s good that players realise when performance isn’t good enough, but they really should do their talking on the pitch.
Well Delph certainly did hisvtalking on the pitch, and has done so since he started playing for the club, and getting criticised, by some fans, for doing so.

That’s fair enough, it’s happened a lot in the past and understand it getting on your nerves, it certainly got on mine, but I’m talking about Delph, a new player to the club, he seems embarrassed by the performances of some of his new team mates, he is a seasoned professional, just come from the champions, a team of winners.

Going by some reports Delph was the last player to leave the dressing room after the game on Saturday, some were gone as soon as they had showered and changed, honestly don’t know if that is true, what I do know is Delph was always in the game, passing it, not always successful, and then looking for a return pass, talking and shouting at his team mates, urging them on, how many of the other players did this. He looks like a winner to me and he is trying to get some reaction from his fellow players. I obviously don’t know his true feelings, I’m not a stage door Johnnie, but even at this early stage of his career at Everton, he looks like he cares about the club, or at the very least he gives his all in a professional manner.
Delph has just come from a changing room in which they just won 3 major trophies.

the difference in attitude between the city management and players must be worlds apart.

I agree he never had and he was one of the better players. But he still wasn’t exactly good himself, he just didn’t embarrass himself as much as the others did

Got no problem with him coming out saying it, but it’s when it’s every week and then every game after they issue this big rallying cry they put on a pathetic showing again

Case point Coleman done it after the Bournemouth game and then they go out do themselves on Saturday

No, they should be able to realise it while on the pitch and pick their game up or change something…these are meant to be professionals.

Seriously though, I don’t expect anything from Everton anymore other than to be massively let down on a regular basis. It’s a sad state of affairs that I can see no end of atm.

He never hid at any time during the game, made some poor passes like all of them, wasn’t the worst player by far, wanted to win, tried his best and tried to make the others play better than they were, did a captains job without the armband.

Pity they dont do their talking on the actual pitch mate, that 2nd half was just appalling. But lets just be glad to stay in the Prem eh? I don’t give a toss what a highly paid player says. Prove it during the game rather than spouting off after.

I don’t think this was a rallying cry, he was telling his team mates DURING the Bournemouth game that they were not playing well, much more bluntly than that. Delph plays like he wants to win and shouts and encourages the players throughout the game, if we had a few more players with Delph’s spirit and passion we wouldn’t be moaning as much and we wouldn’t be in the mess we are definitely in.

I love Delph’s attitude but he needs to lead first from his action. Last week he was shouting at everyone then was at fault for a goal and also misplaced a pass that could have led to another. Generally his game fell apart.

Focus, work your nuts off, then work harder. Maybe then they can begin to talk.

    lol lol lol

  32. They need a rocket up their arse,
the second half at Wembley against utd is just one case of players taking charge of a game when the managers lost the plot,
Surely they’re experienced enough to work out how to play, if the managers instructions aren’t working, try something that does?

  33. Delph might expect more and be hurting. The likes of Schneiderlin and Siggurdson will not care one jot.

I know the players are wheeled out to give stock answers at times like this, but they shouldn’t be surprised when people who had to sit through 90 minutes of useless football are not impressed with a bland attempt to calm the waters.

  39. Sounds good but means nothing.
He didn’t speak about the lack of tempo, the lack of creativity, the inability to defend against a very average team who barely had five attacks in the game although we had a back four and two defensive midfielders in front of them.

Of course they wanted to win, of course they tried to prepare well…. that should not even be mentionad, it is a given.

Why they failed so abjectly to do so is what I would like to hear him address.
Did the players not carry out the managers plan, if not then why ?

  40. oh another rallying cry

  41. I like having this guy around, you can tell it actually hurts him unlike many of the spineless wasters we still employ. Hopefully he’s able to drag people up rather than let them drag him down.
