Portsmouth Report Abuse

BBC SPORT | Football | My Club | Portsmouth | Portsmouth report Campbell abuse

Quote:
Portsmouth intend to make an official complaint to the Football Association over insults aimed at Sol Campbell by Spurs fans at Fratton Park last Sunday.
Campbell, who chose to leave Tottenham on a free transfer to rivals Arsenal in 2001, was subjected to prolonged abuse.
Complaints from Portsmouth fans were made to Hampshire Police, who initially said they could not take action due to the huge number of Spurs fans involved.
The FA said it will ban for life any fans they can prove were connected.
BBC Sport's Gordon Farquhar explained that both the FA and the local police were now dealing with the matter.
"They wanted a formal complaint to come from the club too as that reinforces their position legally, because they intend to get tough," he said.
"The FA say this isn't about hitting Spurs as a club, it's about identifying those responsible now and making sure they're banned from football for life."
Pompey urged the FA to investigate after holding talks with Campbell, their 34-year-old club captain.
In a statement Portsmouth said: "Both Sol and the club feel no player should be subjected to personal abuse of this nature and that it has no place in football.
"The club will be urging the FA to look into this as a matter of urgency and will co-operate fully in any investigations which take place, either by the FA or by Hampshire Police."
Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for Hampshire Police confirmed that one complaint had been made and that it would be investigated.
Opinions? Think Portsmouth are pathetic really.

players get over £50,000 a week. They should be abused. If i was earning that much money i would happily listen to abuse.

I don't agree.

I don't think players should have to put up with that crap.

Too right Bill. It really annoys me when people say stuff like that.

Oh they get X pounds a week so should be able to take offensive personal abuse.

Oh they get x pounds a week so should be able to play 10 games in 6 days.

Nobody should have to take abuse like that whilst doing their job. Doesn't matter how much they get paid in the slightest because they are paid to play football not somehow be supermen with no feelings and emotions.

Booing and stuff is fair enough, but personal and racist abuse crosses the line and cannot be justified by someones wages.

No one has mentioned its racist....

I think to report it is a joke. If you think otherwise then you are agreeing with Benitez who condemned Evertonians for saying naughty things to Steven Gerrard.

Rooney got a hell of a lot more abuse from Evertonians. Imagine if he left on a free to Liverpool...

It's not right that players get abused but they are well paid to be able to cope with it, as long as it is'nt homophobic or racial abuse, if so that should never be accepted.

I got the racist thing from this post off another board, it might not be true but it wouldn't be surprising if racial abuse was aimed at him considering the hatred for him :

Quote:
Rude words be on these links and beyond this point.

"Smash you in your fucking mouth"

More "You're a ****" chants.

Couple of Spurs fans I know (go home and away) commented that the "You're a ****" chanters also used the following:

You are my sunshine (Sol Campbell is gay)
Campbell loves Barrymore...
Won't give a fuck if you're hanging, from a tree, Judas **** with HIV

Most of it's typical football banter, but some of it is pretty nasty.

I'm only going on their word that those songs were used, and there were more they told me as well.

"You black bastard"
"You're gay and you know you are"

and general stuff all with a mixture of '****', 'black', 'poof' and 'nigger' in them.
And not just the fact its aimed at one individuoal, there are bound to be families with kids at the game, anyone want tgheir kids hearing that?

Personally i think all abuse of footballers is dumb (that isn't clearly humourous or sarcastic and is hatefilled) when it comes down to it and action should be taken to cut it out. You wouldn't shout stuff at the person in the street and expect to get away with it so why should you at a game of football.

Of course some stuff is harmless, there is a line that gets crossed but not everything does. Depends where you draw the line though.

But a lot of stuff crosses that line for me, and yes that includes the song about Gerrard. Its not the worst song but its still personal abuse and i doubt anyone who sings it would like it sung at them. Same with songs about Carsleys kid.

Its just dumb and gives football fans a bad name.
