It is a time killer for me. Guys in work started playing it so eventually gave in and joined them. I suppose it is fun for what its worth, raiding whilst waiting those days for stuff to upgrade. Generally i have a builder free to spend gold on my wall so i have a game to play each day.
But it was all peer pressure that started me off, i was playing star command at the time haha

Fortunately I've been able to resist spending any on it. Takes a long time to make progress though.

1. Don't waste you gems on anything but builders
2. Don't upgrade Town Hall before everything is upgraded
3. Everything should be about getting gold and planning your building around this
4. Have fun
Follow these rules and you'll do ok. Break the rules and it's a long way to fixing the game

My problem i am facing with the game is what is sucking the fun out of it for me.
I have to save up for upgrades, which involves attacking other people to gain said money. However as soon as i get to about a million i start getting attacked and getting it robbed off me. At one point about a week or so ago i had the equivelant of 1 million gold taken off me in about 10 hours! i then have to spend the gold on something to prevent being attacked which then stops me saving up. i can upgrade walls to help with my defence but then this costs time and money which sucks the fun out the game, i want a gold cannon, not a few pieces of wall for my time!
It is highly fustrating. Even today i wanted to upgrade my goblins (i know how geeky that sounds btw) so i needed 2.25 million elixir. I currently have 1.7 million as i have been constantly attacked. got an alert now for it and the previous one was like 10 dragons or something like that.

Take a break from your level, drop lower, and farm gold to get what you need. When you see your defenses built up you'll see the attacks slow up.

I am actually quite low. Between 1350 and 1250 generally. I have found though you need to be around there to have anyone worth attacking appear. Otherwise you trawl through base after base of nothing loot, In my experience anyway.
I'd add
5. get into a good clan where the big boys look after the little boys - donations
6. Upgrade your clan castle to allow 20 troops to fill it - will help attack and defence
7. complete the side tasks and goblin trail to earn gems and loot - goblin trail doesn't kill you shield
8. Have fun on the chat thing.
Look, it is a game so use all it is. Get a good vibe in the Clan and it is a good craic even if you are waiting fot that eight day tesla upgarde to complete.
