I believe we won 2-0 courtesy of an own goal by their right back and one from Connor McAleny. Denis Stracqualursi went off injured in the first half

James McFadden played 45 minutes as a late own goal from Liam Marrs and a strike from substitute Conor McAleny earned Everton Reserves a 2-0 win over Sunderland on Tuesday afternoon.

In the behind-closed-doors fixture at Everton’s training ground, McFadden, who returned to the Blues as a free agent on Monday, partnered Denis Stracqualursi up front. There were also run-outs for the likes of Marcus Hahnemann, Ross Barkley and Magaye Gueye.

Played in cold and windy conditions, Jake Bidwell made a fine sliding tackle on Jordan Cook on eight minutes as the Sunderland man ran onto a through-ball from Aristote Guerin-Lokonga and shaped to shoot.

At the other end on 12 minutes, James Wallace, named captain for the game, fired wide from 25 yards before a Sunderland corner caused problems in the Everton box, with Tyias Browning nodding clear from close to the goal line.

The best chance of the opening half came on 32 minutes. Ibou Touray sprayed the ball out to Gueye on the right-hand side. The Frenchman took a touch and then played in the onrushing Wallace but the youngster blazed over the bar from the right-hand edge of the six-yard box.

Cook hit a half-volley straight at Hahnemann on 39 minutes, before Anton Forrester entered the fray in first-half stoppage time. The young striker replaced Stracqualursi, who had picked up a knock.

McFadden was withdrawn at the interval for McAleny and Everton created the first chance of the second period, Gueye getting close to the byline but electing to shoot when a cross might have been the better option.

Adam Forshaw then played in McAleny down the right. Forshaw wanted the return pass but McAleny went for goal and his effort flew harmlessly over the bar.

The swirling wind almost put Sunderland in front on the hour mark. Cook’s delivery sailed over Hahnemann’s head but Browning was there to clear off the line again. Sunderland claims that the ball had crossed the line fell on deaf ears.

Shortly afterwards, Wallace broke with the ball and fed Barkley, whose shot was deflected just over, before Femi Orenuga entered the fray for Wallace on 75 minutes in Everton’s final substitution.

With the game heading for a draw, Everton finally made the breakthrough on 82 minutes. Forshaw ran from deep and with the Sunderland defence backing off, he tried to play in Forrester, only for Marrs to stick out a leg and send the ball past Lewis King from eight yards.

Just over 60 seconds later it was 2-0. Barkley pressured David Meyler into a misplaced pass and McAleny took advantage, racing clear to slot past Lewis and make sure of the win for the Toffees.

There was still time for Hahnemann to make a superb one-handed save from Black Cats substitute Roarie Deacon as the American kept a clean sheet on his first appearance in an Everton shirt.

Alan Stubbs’ side are next in action on Thursday 3 November when they take on Manchester United away.
